CEOs message

The Department of Forestry and Fisheries are proposing an expansion of Aquaculture operations in the Saldanha Bay area. A Basic Assessment is being conducted by SRK Consulting on behalf of DAFF. MIASA has submitted comments urging better consideration of multi stakeholder use of the water, particularly with respect to recreational water based use, including sailing.

SAMSA recently increased their fees. Whilst the majority of fees went up between 10 and 12%, the Certificates of Competence and Certificates of Fitness for small vessels increased substantially more. MIASA will continue engaging with SAMSA to understand why this increase was implemented, as it effectively creates another barrier to boating and does not support our collective efforts to Grow Boating in South Africa.

In addition to the fee increases MIASA are also following up with SAMSA on the length of time it takes to issue Certificates of Competence. According to member reports the six month temporary certificates are expiring before the official certification.

I wish you all a successful Johannesburg Boat Show this weekend and I look forward to meeting with some of you at Nasrec.

Warm regards
