The dti launched the fifth iteration of the Industrial Policy Action Plan for 2016/17 last week. The sector focus has widened to include ship building, rig repair and marine manufacturing. The key programmes include localisation, marine manufacturing component accreditation, a marine manufacturing development plan and a strategic marketing plan for Africa and the Gulf region. The shift from” boat building and associated services” a few years ago in IPAP shows a stronger alignment with the objectives of Operations Phakisa which has a broader sectoral approach.

A key highlight of this year’s IPAP is the development of a support framework for black industrialists that will be developed over the coming year. Our Export Council, SABBEX, will be running the programme for our sector and it aims at promoting transformation through the support of black owned entities.

We hosted a very successful Industry Networking Breakfast this month with international keynote speaker Neal Petersen who gave an inspirational talk about tackling life head on and focusing on solutions – something we all need to be reminded of once in a while. A big thank you to our member company GAC Laser for sponsoring the event. 20160509_085345

We will be hosting a post Boat Show networking event in Durban on the 27th of June. Even if you are not a member please join us and mail simone@sabbex for details. We plan to hold events bi-monthly and have interesting speakers. There is currently an opportunity for sponsorship of the next event on the 14th of July, for those who wish to position their brand and use the networking platform provided.

Warm regards
